The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place today, May 6th, at Churchill Downs in Louisville. This event is primarily about horses, but the mint juleps are also a noteworthy attraction. The drink is usually made available at Churchill Downs and costs $1,000 with proceeds going to a charity program that helps raise money for retired thoroughbreds. If you don’t want to spend such an amount, we have recipes you can experiment with.

Even if you can’t make it to the event, you can still down a mint julep at home. New Riff Distilling in Bellevue appears to have a fun take on the traditional drink. The julep from the company is named Run for the Rye, a wordplay on Run for the Roses, a nickname for the Derby due to the fact a winning jockey receives a garland made of hundreds of roses. New Riff Distilling reportedly mixes it all up with a tropical twist instead of just a simple syrup.

New Riff Distilling’s Run For The Eye Mint Julep:

  • Handful of fresh mint
  • Crushed ice

Instruction: All ingredients listed are to be added to a shaker tin filled with ice. Next, you strain into a highball glass or a cooper julep cup over broken ice and garnish with fresh mint. If you are interested in a straight-up, no-frills julep, you can also try out Marker’s Mark mint julep recipe.

However, the first leg of the Triple Crown will take place today and about 19 horses will be featured in the 2023 Kentucky Derby. Brad Cox, according to CBS Sports trains four of the Kentucky Derby entries, including Angel of Empire, who had finished third in the Road to the Kentucky Derby standings. Angel of Empire could be the Louisville native’s best shot at a win, with the 2023 Kentucky Derby odds pricing him as the third favorite at 8-1.
