The julep from the company is named Run for the Rye, a wordplay on Run for the Roses, a nickname for the Derby due to the fact a winning jockey receives a garland made of hundreds of roses. New Riff Distilling reportedly mixes it all up with a tropical twist instead of just a simple syrup.
New Riff Distilling’s Run For The Eye Mint Julep:
- 2 oz. New Riff Kentucky straight rye
- .75 oz. pineapple syrup (store-bought or homemade)
- Handful of fresh mint
- Crushed ice
Instruction: All ingredients listed are to be added to a shaker tin filled with ice. Next, you strain into a highball glass or a cooper julep cup over broken ice and garnish with fresh mint. The Maker’s Mark Mint Julep
- 2 parts Maker’s Mark Bourbon
- 1/2-part simple syrup
- Fresh mint leaves
Instructions: Add all mint and syrup to a julep cup, then gently muddle the mint to express the oils. Next is the Marker’s Mark crushed ice. Finally, stir and garnish with a mint spring.
However, the first leg of the Triple Crown will take place today and about 19 horses will be featured in the 2023 Kentucky Derby.
