Is ‘A Man Called Otto’ A True Story?
‘A Man Called Otto’ is not based on a true story. It’s an American remake of the 2015 Swedish film ‘A Man Called Ove’, which was adapted from the 2012 novel of the same name by Fredrik Backman. While Backman was inspired by a real-life grumpy Swede named Ove, the novel and adaptations are fictional and not based on true events.
Backman was a freelance writer for the Swedish magazine Cafe when he read a blog post by a colleague about a grumpy man named Ove having an angry meltdown at an art museum. This inspired Backman to create his fictional character named Ove and write blog posts about his pet peeves and annoyances, calling it “I Am a Man Called Ove”.
This was revealed in a 2016 New York Times interview with Backman. The more posts Backman wrote, the more he realized he had created a fully-fledged character, with the potential for a complete novel. “There’s a lot of me in him,” Backman said of his character, Ove. “When we get angry, it’s about a principle, and we get angry because people don’t understand why we’re angry.”
The character of Ove and his story in both the Swedish and American adaptations are entirely fictional. Ove’s dead wife, his plan to take his own life, and his interfering neighbors are all invented for the story. Tom Hanks’ character in ‘A Man Called Otto’ is also completely fictional and not based on any real person.
