At the ceremony, the new King Charles expressed his desire to be a ‘blessing’ to people of ‘every faith and conviction’, and serve his millions of subjects. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby placed the St. Edward’s Crown on Charles’ head, making him the 40th reigning sovereign, in a ceremony that dates back to William the Conqueror in 1066.
Interestingly, Prince William quite stole the spotlight with a touching gesture. He was seen kneeling to give an oath of allegiance to his father, King Charles.
And as the Prince of Wales concluded his oath, he didn’t hessite to tenderly kiss his father’s cheeks and touch his crown.
This moment brought tears to the King’s eyes and Williams’ oath reads: ‘I, William, Prince of Wales, pledge my loyalty to you and faith and truth I will bear unto you, as your liege man of life and limb. So, help me God.’ He then stood, touched the crown, and kissed the King on the cheek.’ Following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II last September, Charles’s historic coronation is finally fulfilled.
The new King was seen moved by his son’s gesture as he nodded and said ‘amen’ and ‘thank you William’.
Watched by millions worldwide, Camilla was also crowned, as Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s coronation anthem played. Archbishop of Canterbury, Mr. Welby, crowned Queen Camilla with Queen Mary’s Crown, praying for her to be filled with princely virtues and crowned with gracious favor. Queen Mary’s Crown was originally made for Charles’ great-grandmother, Queen Mary, for the coronation of George V in 1911.
The Bishop of Dover also presented Queen Camilla with the Rod with Dove and the Scepter with a Cross, which she acknowledged by touching them in turn, unlike Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1937, who held them.
The Archbishop of Canterbury then said: ‘Receive the Royal Scepter and the Rod of equity and mercy. May the Spirit guide you in wisdom and grace, that by your service and ministry justice and mercy may be seen in all the earth.’ However, before the coronation, the King underwent a private ceremony where he was anointed with holy oil. He was dressed in a white linen garment known as the Colobium Sindonis and a golden coat called the Supertunica, with the coronation girdle placed around his waist.
After the anointing, the King received the coronation regalia. Moments before taking the oath, Charles kissed the Bible and said, I, Charles, do solemnly and sincerely in the presence of God profess, testify, and declare that I am a faithful Protestant and that I will, according to the true intent of the enactments which secure the Protestant succession to the throne, uphold and maintain the said enactments to the best of my powers according to law.’
However, among a congregation of 2,300 people, his family was seated closest to him, while Prince Harry sat in the third row, away from the working royals, Prince William, his wife, and children.
