In the newest installment of NetherRealm’s fighting game franchiseMortal Kombat 1, the narrative leaps to the past, centuries before the events of the established Mortal Kombat timeline. Despite this temporal shift, the beloved character Johnny Cage will join the roster alongside ancient warriors such as Raiden, Mileena, Kitana, and Kung Lao.

Adding to the excitement, actor Jean-Claude Van Damme will make an appearance as Johnny Cage in MK1.

This inclusion of Van Damme in Mortal Kombat 1 brings a full circle to MK’s history, as the Belgian martial artist played a significant role in inspiring the original Mortal Kombat and its iconic Hollywood hero, Johnny Cage. Having Van Damme in MK1 appears to have been a long pursuit, as MK series co-creator Ed Boon said last year that developers at Midway pitched the idea to Van Damme, but it never panned out.

The co-creator at the time added, “We took images of Bloodsport and talked about digitized graphics and how it’s going to be [Van Damme] in the game. At some point he passed. But we later inquired, maybe a couple of times, as recently as, like, [Mortal Kombat 9], if he wanted to be in a skin of the game. For some reason, it just never came through.”

Van Damme has changed his mind, and his Cage skin will be included with the game’s Kombat Pack add-on, which includes the Mortal Kombat 1 Premium Edition, selling at $109.99, and the Kollector’s Edition, selling at $249.99. The standard edition of Mortal Kombat 1, which launches this September, will cost $69.99 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
