There are now reports indicating that Lionel Messi is set to depart from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. He had been warmly received upon his arrival from Barcelona in 2021, but Messi’s performance so far and uncertainty about his priorities this season have since created a tense relationship with the fans.
It’s believed the Argentine soccer icon is unconvinced by the club’s goal of becoming one of Europe’s top teams, especially as they failed to progress beyond the Champions League’s first knockout round. Late Wednesday, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, however, revealed that Messi’s father, Jorge, had already informed the club of his son’s decision to leave.
Likewise, Spanish football writer Guillem Balague wrote that Messi “believes PSG’s budget could be limited next season to comply with Financial Fair Play rules – putting the quality of their squad at risk.” He currently earns over €3 million a month at PSG, and this puts him third on the club’s list of top earners behind mates Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.
What happened between Messi and PSG?
The 35-year-old soccer player is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain after receiving a two-week unpaid suspension from the club. The club had mandated a training session following their 3-1 loss to Lorient, but Messi reportedly decided to travel to Saudi Arabia, where he has a lucrative commercial agreement.
Aside from this, PSG fans had last month booed Messi following a period of poor performances. The Argentine has impressive statistics of 31 goals and 34 assists in 71 games for PSG, but the team’s failure to advance in Europe has caused frustration among supporters.
Where will Messi go next?
Lionel Messi has a sentimental option for his next move, which would be a return to Barcelona, a choice that the club officials have expressed openly. However, Barcelona’s economic situation is delicate, and they cannot register any new signings unless they can significantly reduce their wage bill.
Alternatively, Messi could consider options in the United States or the Middle East. Inter Miami, an MLS team, has reportedly shown interest in acquiring him. Another possibility is reigniting the rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League, where he has been offered an enormous sum of €400 million ($442m) for a single year.
