Posted by USA Track and Field has confirmed that Tori Bowie, a world champion sprinter has passed away at age 32. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Orlando disclosed they had responded to a home in the area to check on a woman in her thirties who had been missing and nor heard from for several days. The sheriff’s office then claimed they found a deceased woman tentatively identified as Frentorish “Tori” Bowie (born August 27, 1990) in the residence, and there is no suspicion of any foul play.
The cause of the sprinter’s death has not been revealed.
“USATF is deeply saddened by the passing of Tori Bowie, a three-time Olympic medalist and two-time world champion,” USA Track and Field CEO Max Siegel said in a statement. “A talented athlete, her impact on the sport is immeasurable, and she will be greatly missed.” As a teen who grew up in Sandhill, Mississippi, Bowie was persuaded to join track and field and quickly rose through the ranks as both a sprinter and a long jumper.
Bowie attended Southern Mississippi, where she dominated the long jump NCAA championships at both the indoor and outdoor events in 2011.
Her performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics included an outstanding display, where she clinched the silver medal in the 100-meter race and the bronze medal in the 200-meter race. She also played a crucial role in helping her team win the gold medal by anchoring the 4×100 relay with Tianna Bartoletta, Allyson Felix, and English Gardner. A year later, she won the 100 meters at the 2017 world championships in London. She also helped the 4×100 team to gold.
The track and field community is mourning the loss of Bowie, with Jamaican sprint sensation Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce tweeting: “My heart breaks for the family of Tori Bowie. A great competitor and source of light. Your energy and smile will always be with me. Rest in peace.”
U.S. hurdler Lolo Jones also wrote: “Too young. Gutted to hear about Tori Bowie. Incredible talent. A beautiful runner. I pray for the comfort of her family, Thank you for blessing us with her. The running community mourns an incredible loss.” Brittney Reese, a three-time Olympic medalist in the long jump, wrote: “I’m so heartbroken over this … You have made a lot of us proud thank you for representing our state of Mississippi like you did. RIP!”
In a post on Twitter, Icon Management included a picture of Bowie holding up her hands in the shape of a heart and wrote: “We’ve lost a client, dear friend, daughter, and sister. Tori was a champion…a beacon of light that shined so bright! We’re truly heartbroken, and our prayers are with the family and friends.”
