An unlikely star stood out among the sea of royals and celebrities at the Coronation of King Charles III.  Penny Mordaunt was the unlikely star and she had no doubt impressed spectators with her exceptional display of duties in Westminster Abbey. Mordaunt is the Lord President of the Privy Council, a council of advisers to the Monarch and her responsibility included carrying an 8 lbs.17th-century Sword of State during the King’s Procession.

So far, Penny Mordaunt, also known as the Leader of the House of Commons is being praised and applauded for her graceful conduct and her stylish appearance.

Th 49-year-old donned a bespoke teal midi dress, teamed with a matching cape and a Jane Taylor hat adorned with gold fern embroidery. The fern pattern on her hat was a subtle tribute to the Privy Council’s uniform design. Of her duty, Mordaunt had told The Times Red Box podcast. “[I] will be carrying the Sword of State, which is the heaviest sword, so I’ve been doing some press-ups to train for that.” 

Mordaunt was required to keep the sword, which represents the king’s authority at a right angle to her body.

“We practiced with some replicas that were weighted, and it’s a huge honor to do it,” she added, noting that her navy background came in handy when preparing. Mordaunt also told Politico that she “felt it wasn’t right” to wear the traditional black-and-gold court dress of the privy council, as the Marquess of Salisbury during Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953.

Notably, Mordaunt made history as the first woman to do this royal duty.

After being appointed as Leader of the House of Commons by former Prime Minister Liz Truss on September 6, Mordaunt assumed royal duties just four days later. Mordaunt, who represents Portsmouth North in Parliament, is widely recognized for her unsuccessful bid to become the leader of the Conservative Party. In 2022, she ran against Rishi Sunak, the current Prime Minister, and finished third.

Mordaunt eventually endorsed Truss and secured a position in her brief administration. Before this, Mordaunt had served as Minister of State at the Department for International Trade from 2021 to 2022. In 2019, she made history by becoming the first female Secretary of State for Defence. In the past, she also had served as a Governor at the World Bank.
