Mordaunt also told Politico that she “felt it wasn’t right” to wear the traditional black-and-gold court dress of the privy council, as the Marquess of Salisbury during Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953.
Notably, Mordaunt made history as the first woman to do this royal duty.
After being appointed as Leader of the House of Commons by former Prime Minister Liz Truss on September 6, Mordaunt assumed royal duties just four days later. Mordaunt, who represents Portsmouth North in Parliament, is widely recognized for her unsuccessful bid to become the leader of the Conservative Party. In 2022, she ran against Rishi Sunak, the current Prime Minister, and finished third.
Mordaunt eventually endorsed Truss and secured a position in her brief administration. Before this, Mordaunt had served as Minister of State at the Department for International Trade from 2021 to 2022. In 2019, she made history by becoming the first female Secretary of State for Defence. In the past, she also had served as a Governor at the World Bank.
