The death of a 13-year-old boy from Ohio has been linked to a TikTok challenge where participants consume excessive doses of Benadryl. Jacob Stevens’ parents informed WSYX Channel 6 that their son ingested 12 to 14 pills of the over-the-counter antihistamine with the intention of experiencing hallucinations.

However, a high dosage of Benadryl led to seizures, and Jacob [pictured] was admitted to the hospital, where he remained on a ventilator for a week before passing away.

Relatives of Jacob are now drawing attention to his tragic death with the aim of discouraging other children from attempting the TikTok challenge, as reported by WSYX. “I’m going to do anything I can to make sure another child doesn’t go through it,” Jacob’s grandmother, Dianna Stevens, told WSYX.

According to CBS News, the Benadryl challenge is not a new phenomenon, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been cautioning against it for years.

The challenge has also prompted warnings from Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of Benadryl, stating that it is a dangerous trend that should be stopped immediately. Jacob, described as a well-mannered and loving child, tragically fell victim to the challenge and in response, Jacob’s parents are advocating for age restrictions on Benadryl purchases and increased regulation on TikTok.

The New York Post reports that TikTok will soon be implementing limits on daily screen time, with users under 18 restricted to one hour, and users under 13 requiring a parent or guardian passcode for an additional 30 minutes.
