Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum disclosed that the injured victims were ages 71, 56, 39, and 25. It’s unknown if the shooter singled out the affected or perhaps if they were patients or employees at the hospital. Schierbaum pointed out that the police received notifications of the shooting in the waiting room of one of the offices at Northside Hospital Midtown Medical.

Interestingly, the shooter’s mother was present at the incident, but she reportedly sustained no injuries. The police chief further mentioned that the alleged shooter’s family is providing assistance to law enforcement. Schierbaum also commented that the suspect has had minimal contact with the police department. In addition, he informed the public that the authorities have not yet found the firearm used in the shooting.

Several law enforcement agencies, including federal agencies, were involved in the investigation, ensuing search for the perpetrator. Schierbaum mentioned that people had reported seeing the alleged suspect in Atlanta and other areas of Cobb County while he was evading authorities. The APD also investigated a carjacking believed to have been carried out by the shooter, which happened not long after the shooting on 14th Street and Williams Street.

The vehicle has thankfully been recovered by Cobb County police. Northside Hospital had also confirmed its cooperation with the police investigation, stating, “We urge people in the area to shelter in place and follow instructions from law enforcement on the scene,” the hospital tweeted. “This tragedy is affecting all of us, and we ask for patience and prayers at this time.”

According to KJ Johnson, he was at the Northside Medical Building for his son’s medical appointment when the shooting happened. Initially, Johnson claimed he believed the sound was a motorcycle firing, but soon it dawned on him that it was gunfire. He and other patients were alerted to the attack by the TV in the waiting room.

At that time, we had no idea there was a shooting.” But then the television was on, and there was breaking news on the television. And they mentioned that there was an active shooter, and they gave the address, and the address was the building that we were in,” Johnson said, adding that the shooting was just two floors above him.

He recounted, “We were on the ninth floor. “So once everyone heard the shooting happened on the 11th floor, you can imagine that some of the folks in the room got a little nervous, a little tense.”  Johnson commended the medical staff for not aggravating the situation and shared that he had assisted a patient with mobility issues in descending the nine-story staircase during the evacuation.
