Netflix Cracks Down On Password Sharing, Charging $7.99 Per Month

Netflix is set to kick those friends off your account, but you can let them stay by paying for them. Late Tuesday, the streaming giant announced new details about how its crackdown on password sharing will affect viewers and how much it will cost to keep additional people on an account. For a Netflix Standard plan, it costs $15.49 monthly, and you have the option of adding an extra member who uses the service for $7.99 extra.

For Netflix’s Premium package with 4K streaming, you have the option of adding up to two extra members, but each one will also cost $7.99.

Subscribers on the basic or standard plans, which cost $9.99 and $6.99 per month, respectively, don’t have the option to add extra members to their accounts. Netflix’s paid password sharing has reportedly been happening for a while, and it expanded its test to Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, and more recently the United States

support page of Netflix describes extra members as someone who will have their own password and profile, paid for by the person who invited them to join. Extra members’ accounts, however, have their set of restrictions, including they have to be activated in the same country, they can only view or download content on one device at a time and they can’t create extra profiles or log in as a Kids profile.

According to the company, your Netflix household will be set based on where you watch Netflix on a TV and what IP address that device uses. Your location can be reset using either the app on a TV or a device linked to a TV by choosing to confirm or update your household. In addition, you will have to respond to a verification link sent to the account’s listed email address or phone number.
