Police launched a new search for Madeleine McCann, the British child who hit the headlines for her sudden disappearance in 2007. About 20 officers are combing through the vicinity of a reservoir located near the area where she was last seen with rake-like tools scouring the soil, digging, and scraping for any evidence.

The Arade dam, situated 30 miles from Praia da Luz in southern Portugal is the focal point of the investigation as 3-year-old Madeleine McCann was last seen alive there 16 years ago.

Earlier, firefighters were seen navigating the reservoir in a ship. Currently, no details are given regarding the progress made in the ongoing search but then the operation to search for Madeleine McCann is led by Portuguese police with help from German and British colleagues. The Portuguese police established two blue tents and restricted access to the area.

This marks the fourth search for McCann, with the previous ones in 2007 in the Algarve region, followed by searches in 2013, and 2014, and a search in Germany in 2020. Notably, the current search is the first one carried out in the dam area.

German prosecutors in Braunschweig wrote in a statement that “criminal procedural measures are currently taking place in Portugal as part of the investigation into the Madeleine McCann case.” They added, “the measures are being implemented by way of mutual legal assistance by the Portuguese prosecution authorities with the support of officers from the Federal Criminal Police Office.”

The statement concluded, “More detailed information on the background is not being released at this time for investigative tactical reasons.” In 2020, German authorities identified a 45-year-old German citizen, known as Christian Brueckner, as a suspect in Madeleine McCann’s case. It was revealed Brueckner had been present in the Algarve region in 2007. But despite the allegations, the German denied any involvement in McCann’s disappearance.

Although Brueckner is serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for a rape conviction in Portugal in 2005.

Brueckner, who resided in Portugal, around the resort of Praia da Luz, when Madeleine McCann disappeared in 2007, has been a focus of the investigation. However, he has not been officially charged. In the past year, German authorities charged Brueckner with unrelated sexual offenses allegedly committed in Portugal between December 28, 2000, and June 11, 2017.

However, the disappearance of Madeleine McCann earned worldwide attention and the case has led to the creation of television documentaries as well as being featured in books.

The reward for finding McCain, who would now be 20 has reached several million dollars. On the other hand, authorities from Britain, Portugal, and Germany continue their collaborative efforts to unravel the events hinged on the night of May 3, 2007, when Madeleine disappeared from her bed in the southern Portuguese resort.

At the time McCain went missing, she is said to be in the same room as her twin siblings, who were then two years old, while her parents on that night dined with friends at a restaurant. Regarding the latest search, Braunschweig prosecutor Christian Wolters states they are conducting investigations in Portugal based on specific tips and would require some time.
