In the 1990s, the actor established himself as a bona fide movie star with hit movies, including Moonstruck, Leaving Las Vegas, and Adaptation. But in the 2010s, Nicolas Cage’s career appeared to suffer due to a series of straight-to-video failures, and his larger-than-life persona in viral videos even turned him into a meme instead of a respected thespian.

Now that’s he back in the public’s good books, Cage admits to taking some crummy roles for financial gain, mainly because he had to pay back a ton of debt.

In an interview with 60 Minutes, the Face Off actor disclosed that his continued interest in acting isn’t just for fun and that Hollywood roles kept him floating after he fell into $6 million in debt following bad investments. “I was overinvested in real estate. The real estate market crashed, and I couldn’t get out in time,” he said about the years of the housing crisis in the late 2000s.”

As per ABC News, Cage owed the IRS and creditors $14million after he sued his former business manager for allegedly leading toward financial ruin.

But in his interview with 60 Minutes, the actor disclosed he paid them all back, adding “but it was about $6 million. “I never filed for bankruptcy.” Cage added that he relocated to Las Vegas amid his financial woes in 2006 which at the time was tax-free, and began making three to four movies a year. “It was dark, sure,” he said of his days to get back in good financial standing but insisted there was “no doubt” that acting helped him in his darkest times.

Cage continued, “Work was always my guardian angel.” It may not have been a blue chip, but it was still work. Even if the movie ultimately is crummy, they know I’m not phoning it in, that I care every time.”

CNBC reported that at one point Cage owned 15 properties valued in the millions globally. In addition, he also acquired a dinosaur skull dating back 70 million years for $276,000. Although the skull was returned it was found to be stolen. Bustle had also reported that Cage had previously possessed 50 cars, among them a custom-made Lamborghini worth $450,000, designed for the Shah of Iran. The actor also bought a pet octopus for $150,000 and owns a pyramid tomb that he wishes to be buried in after his passing.

However, Cage’s fortune was once estimated to be around $100 million, but according to CNBC, the actor’s net worth as of today stands at around $25 million.
