An eighth person has now been rescued after the six-story Iowa apartment building partially collapsed. No fatalities have since been reported and no known individuals are trapped in the facility. In a release made available Tuesday, the building is now expected to be demolished, and the owners have been served a demolition notice

The cause of the Iowa collapse is yet to be determined, and reportedly, the building’s owners had current permits for repair work for the exterior wall.

The release states‘The fire department has shifted from search to recovery mode. Due to the unstable condition of the property, and in the interest of public safety, residents will not be allowed back into the building.’ It’s unclear how many people might be unaccounted for and how many residents are displaced.

Davenport Fire Chief Mike Carlsten had earlier said crews were dispatched around 4:55 pm Sunday to the apartment building called The Carlsten. Part of the building’s back collapsed and detached from the rest of the structure. The chief added the collapse led to a large natural gas leak and a bit of water gushing into the building. Crews stopped the leaks and resumed the search for survivors.

As of Sunday, seven people were rescued and more than a dozen others were escorted out of the building. Just recently, the city suffered severe flooding after the Mississippi River crested, transforming some Davenport streets into rivers. Also, the collapse seems to evoke memories of the 2021 condo building collapse in Surfside, Florida that took the lives of about 98 people.

Last month, an NYC parking garage with several property violations collapsed, killing one person and injuring at least 5 others. Of his experience, Andrew Sommer told CNN affiliate KWQC‘I live in the building just next to it, and we heard just like a large crash. Shortly after, we went outside and saw the whole section of the building gone.’ Notably, the Davenport building is a little more than a quarter mile from the Mississippi River.
