Influential US Talk Show Host Jerry Springer Dies At Age 79

The influential US talk show host & former mayor of Cincinnati, has passed away at the age of 79. Linda Shafran, his long-time publicist, disclosed he died at his home in suburban Chicago on Thursday after a brief illness. Jerry Springer shot to fame as the host of The Jerry Springer Show, which had people from different parts of the world exposing often scandalous details of their lives, including infidelity, love triangles, as well as incest.

Physical fights between the guests were not unusual on the Jerry Springer show, often prompting chants of “Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!” from the audience. The host, born in London during World War II, moved to New York with his family when he was a child. In the 1970s, Springer served on Cincinnati’s city council and was also elected as the city’s mayor for only one term. Initially, he didn’t expect much success with his talk show. 

The host is survived by his wife, Micki Velton, to whom he tied the knot in 1973, and a daughter, Katie.

He once told the Cincinnati Enquirer about the success of his show, stating, “I remember when we announced the show in 1991, and I was thinking: ‘Who are we kidding? “We’ll be lucky to last 13 weeks!'” The show has now run for 27 years. Of his passing, Jene Galvin, a spokesman for the family, said, “Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting, or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word. He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart, and humor will live on.”
