President Joe Biden took a spill on stage while passing out diplomas to graduates at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He was helped to his feet by Air Force officials and Secret Service personnel after falling off a black sandbag. The oldest president in U.S. history, at 80, later appeared to be OK and continued to stand before the ceremony concluded a few minutes later.
Biden didn’t appear to sustain any injuries and the White House has confirmed he’s fine.
The White House communications director, Ben LaBolt, said in a tweet that “there was a sandbag on stage while he was shaking hands,” and insisted that Biden is FINE. However, this isn’t the first time the president has tumbled in public. Last summer, he fell when he tried to get off his bike at the end of a ride at Cape Henlopen State Park near his home in Delaware, but said he wasn’t hurt.
Biden also fell but collected himself while speeding up the stairs to board Air Force One. Before his inauguration, he fractured his foot when he slipped while playing with one of his dogs, forcing him to wear a walking boot for weeks. The newest fall is no doubt a new material for the Republicans, who have questioned Biden’s fitness to be president.
In his campaign event in Iowa, former president Donald Trump when asked about Biden, said, “He fell down?” Well, I hope he wasn’t hurt.” Trump then referenced the heavy criticism he earned in 2020 for walking gingerly down a ramp during the graduation ceremony of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. However, Trump, 76, also appeared to have trouble bringing a glass of drink to his mouth.
