One must-watch film that premiered at Cannes Film Festival on May 16th is Jeanne Du Barry. The story of Marie Antoinette is widely known, but the life of her alleged rival, Jeanne du Barry, remains shrouded in mystery. Jeanne, who became the mistress of King Louis XV of France (the grandfather of Marie Antoinette’s husband, King Louis XVI), was born in 1743. Being the illegitimate daughter of a seamstress, she received her education in a convent before taking up various odd jobs.
Jeanne eventually ventured into the world of courtesanship, which granted her access to Parisian high society and quickly gained popularity among the French aristocracy, including King Louis XV. However, there was one obstacle to overcome: she couldn’t hold the official title of maîtresse-en-titre the King’s recognized mistress without marrying into the French nobility. This issue was promptly resolved, and Jeanne secured her place within the royal court.
The film which garnered Johnny Deep a seven-minute standing ovation at Cannes sees him play the role of King Louis XV and the French moviemaker-actress Maïwenn as Jeanne du Barry. Technically, the film has already been released in France but then it’s unknown if or not fans will be able to watch the film in cinemas of different regions. Meanwhile, it’s confirmed Netflix will stream the film but certainly at some point in the future, so it’s fingers crossed.
