As per the Guardian, officials at the Soledad prison allege that the rapper, whose real name is Jaime Brugada Valdez, suffered brutal injuries in what appears to have been a homicide.

Growing up in the Huntington Park region of Los Angeles as the child of Mexican immigrants, MoneySign began recording and sharing his rap music at age 16. His impressive talent caught the attention of Atlantic Records and one of his tracks, “Back to the Bag,” became a hit in the rap scene after its release in 2020.

He continued his meteoric rise with a self-titled EP in March of 2022 and his first full-length album, “Parkside Baby,” which dropped in September. A lawyer for the rapper, Nicholas Rosenberg, told the LA Times that officials from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said MoneySign was stabbed.

Nicholas revealed an investigation was underway, adding ‘People are very shocked. He was a very popular guy, very mild-mannered. People loved him.’ MoneySign’s sentence for two counts of firearm possession in Riverside County had been exacerbated by his breaking parole from an earlier conviction when he served a 10-month sentence from 2020 to 2021.

At the time of his passing, he was facing another gun charge conviction from L.A. County and was expected to serve this sentence concurrently with his previous one. However, as news of his death hit headlines, the rap community has been paying their respect, with Jeff Weiss, describing MoneySign as “a young regional hero embodying the hopes & aspirations of the unsung and overlooked.”
