Passengers Terrified As Large Waves Pounded The Carnival Sunshine Cruise Ship

The passengers on board the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship experienced intense fear when massive waves by a powerful storm battered the vessel, causing a delay in its return from the Bahamas during the Memorial Day Weekend. Passengers aboard the cruise ship shared accounts of water damage and shattered glass, as they endured the onslaught of colossal waves that mercilessly pounded the vessel.

On the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship returning to Charleston, South Carolina, Brad Morrell recorded a video from outside his room and shared it on social media.

The footage shows a somber sky veiled by dark clouds, while the Atlantic Ocean beneath is besieged by powerful whitecaps, painting a turbulent picture. Carnival Cruise Line released a statement to describe the incident, saying ‘Carnival Sunshine’s return to Charleston was impacted by the weather and rough seas on Saturday. The weather’s prolonged impact on the Charleston area delayed the ship’s arrival on Sunday.’

They added, ‘and as a result, the next voyage’s embarkation was also delayed. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all our guests. The weather and rough surf led to some crew cabins being temporarily taken out of service while we clean up water damage. All the public areas of the ship are open and in service and Carnival Sunshine is currently operating its next cruise, a five-day Bahamas sailing.’

Over the Memorial Day weekend, the weather conditions were attributed to a low-pressure system closely monitored by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) for potential tropical or subtropical development. However, it remained at a non-tropical low throughout its duration. Interestingly, NHC forecasters had even visited the headquarters of Carnival Cruise Line in Miami just two days before the ship encountered the powerful storm

Currently, the low-pressure system has moved inland over North Carolina and is expected to gradually weaken in the coming days. But then, its effects persist, causing disruptions to beach plans in specific areas of the mid-Atlantic region and generating hazardous rip currents along the East Coast. As per Associated Press, no serious injuries were reported and the ship eventually docked around 5:00 p.m.
