It’s crucial to recap some key aspects of Gamora’s backstory (Ga-lore-a). Zoe Saldana played the character, who debuted as an assassin nicknamed “the deadliest woman in the galaxy” in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. When she was little, Gamora’s planet fell to Thanos, who then killed half of its inhabitants along with her parents. Thanos adopted her and trained her to be a ruthless killer.

However, in Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamora switched sides with Thanos and joined the Guardians to stop a Kree general, Ronan the Accuser from finding the Power Stone. Over time, Gamora convinced her sister Nebula to abandon Thanos as well. Technically speaking, Gamora is no longer alive. In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos held her captive and took her to Vormir, the one place where Soul Stone was hidden.

And to wield the stone, a beloved person had to be sacrificed. Unfortunately, Thanos believed that his twisted love for his daughter justified her murder for power. He pushed Gamora to her death, and the sacrifice made to the Soul Stone cannot be undone. As a result, Gamora did not return to life after Thanos’ snap, which caused the deaths of countless individuals.

Gamora is alive again:

There are two reasons why Gamora still appears in the franchise. First, Zoe Saldana is contractually obligated to play the role, and Gamora is a significant character in the Guardians of the Galaxy sub-franchise. Passing up the opportunity for Saldana to portray Gamora would result in a loss of star power, revenue, and bargaining power. Second, the explanation within the Marvel Cinematic Universe involves the intricate rules of time travel established in Avengers: Endgame, which might not be immediately evident.

The way Gamora’s presence works in this timeline is more like visiting an alternate universe than traveling through one’s own timeline. Bruce Banner in Endgame alleged that the time travel rules are not the same as those in Back to the Future. At the time the Avengers went back in time and were discovered by a previous version of Thanos, it created an alternate universe in which he learned of a timeline that he used to collect all the Infinity Stones and wipe out half the universe.

This knowledge prompted the Avengers to embark on their time-travel mission to undo Thanos’ snap in the present. After abducting Nebula from the main timeline, the alternate Thanos from a parallel universe commandeered the Avengers’ time-travel technology to reclaim the Infinity Stones. His ultimate goal was to eradicate all life and recreate it, as he believed the resistance he faced after his previous snap was due to his only erasing half of all life.

He brought along his faithful daughters, Alternate Gamora and Alternate Nebula, to assist him in his mission. During the final battle in upstate New York’s Hudson Valley against the Chitahuri armies of Alternate Thanos, Main Timeline Nebula killed her alternate self and convinced Alternate Gamora to join the Avengers in their fight. It was an easy task since Alternate Gamora was already considering defection from Alternate Thanos, similar to Main Gamora’s situation at that point in her life.

Following Iron Man’s self-sacrifice to snap away “Thanos’ forces” in Infinity War, Alternate Gamora found herself in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. This posed a problem for the Guardians of the Galaxy, as this version of Gamora had no memory of them, including their adventures, or her romance-relationship with Star Lord. Despite their offer, she declined to join the team and ventured on her own throughout the galaxy.

As depicted in their appearance in Thor: Love & Thunder, this absence has left a void in the group, particularly in Peter’s heart. While what the future holds for Alternate Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remains unclear, her appearance in the film has been confirmed. And given the circumstances hinged around her introduction to the team and their strong connection to her, it’s possible building their relationship back up will be the central theme of the movie.
