Len Goodman, the longtime judge who served on the shows “Dancing with the Stars” and “Strictly Come Dancing,” has passed away peacefully at age 78. He served as the head judge of the BBC’s “Strictly Come Dancing” for twelve years and also had a huge impact in revitalizing the interest in ballroom dancing. According to his agent Jackie Gill, the renowned judge died of bone cancer.
Among the high profiles mourning Len’s death, the Buckingham Palace has said that Camila, the queen consort is left heartbroken. The wife of King Charles III is a die-hard of the Strictly and had danced with the judge at a 2019 event while celebrating the British Dance Council. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, through his spokesperson, says Len was a great entertainer and would be missed by many.
Notably, Len retired in November after serving as the head judge on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” for 15 years. He had judged both the British and American versions of the show each fall, regularly commuting between the two countries. Aside from his judging role, Len also hosted BBC radio programs and created TV documentaries. In 2012, he debuted a show about the Titanic’s sinking.
BBC director-general Tim Davie also mentioned that Len was “a wonderful, entertainer, adding, ‘He appealed to all ages and felt like a member of everyone’s family. Len was at the very heart of Strictly’s success. He will be hugely missed by the public and his many friends and family.” However, British broadcaster Esther Rantzen highlighted that the judge had been astonished by his late-life fame, claiming he thrived because he was firm but fair, funny but also a gentleman.
