Police in Berlin claimed they have opened an investigation of Roger Waters on suspicion of incitement over a costume the Pink Floyd co-founder wore while performing in the German capital last week. The investigation is based on suspicions the context of the costume could constitute a glorification, justification, or approval of Nazi rule and therefore a disturbance of the public peace.
Photos online showed Rogers firing a machine gun while dressed in a long black coat with a red armband.
As the ongoing investigation concludes, the case will reportedly be transferred to Berlin prosecutors, who would then decide whether to or not pursue any charges. Notably, Rogers has drawn rage for his firm support of the BDS movement, which calls for boycotts and sanctions against Israel. He has since rejected accusations of antisemitism.
Authorities in Frankfurt tried to prevent his concert scheduled for May 28, but Rogers challenged the move successfully in a local court. In Munich, the city council said it had explored possibilities of banning a concert but concluded it wasn’t legally possible to cancel a contract with the organizer. His appearance was accompanied by a protest attended by the local Jewish community’s leader.
In 2022, the Polish city of Krakow canceled gigs by Rogers because of his sympathetic stance toward Russia in its war against Ukraine.
On the other hand, flaunting symbols of Nazi rule, such as the swastika or SS insignia, is considered illegal in Germany, with exemptions for educational purposes and art contexts.
