Flight Chaos Reigns At Denver Airport As Severe Weather Affects Colorado

Denver International Airport (DIA) grapples with severe weather, causing widespread flight disruptions. As of Wednesday, 5:10 p.m., FlightAware had registered 129 flight cancellations and 613 delays at DIA. Adding to the flight chaos, a tornado warning loomed from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the vicinity south of the airport.

Southwest, United, Mesa, Jazz, British Airways, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Key Lime Air, SkyWest, American Airlines, CommuteAir, Volaris, Air Canada, and Air France wrestle with the impact of the severe weather.

Colorado was pummeled by intense weather overnight, commencing late Tuesday and persisting into Wednesday. The tempest unleashed a barrage of hail, fierce winds, and rain upon towns situated north of the Denver metropolitan area, including Erie and Longmont. Severe weather is likely again, posing a threat of substantial hail and destructive winds from Denver up to Fort Collins.

The Denver metro area stands at its highest vulnerability from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, with a lingering but reduced risk until midnight.

Large hail emerges as the foremost peril for the region, although wind speeds reaching 60 mph or even 70 mph pose a threat to the metro area. Furthermore, the possibility of tornadoes looms across eastern Colorado, including the vicinity of Denver. Wednesday will no doubt witness a meandering area of low pressure near the Four Corners, triggering an influx of moisture toward eastern Colorado.

The conditions mentioned above, coupled with notable wind shear manifested by varying wind speed and direction at different altitudes, create favorable conditions for the formation of supercell thunderstorms.

However, if you have access to a garage or carport, it would be wise to safeguard your vehicle there. And as for gardening plans, it’s advisable to postpone planting until the latter part of the week. Strikingly, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), the authoritative entity for severe weather forecasts, designates Denver and a significant portion of northeastern Colorado as a “slight risk” zone for severe storms.
